DIRECTOR/EDUCATOR
My teaching philosophy…
Something I have always found to be lacking in the world of musical theater teaching is compassion for the vulnerability of actors. What we do is hard! When we do it well, we offer up our hearts and souls and stand in an extremely vulnerable space. The worst thing that a teacher can do is to make a performer feel self conscious thus disabling them from telling their unique truths as a performer.
My goal as a teacher and director is to guide the actor toward emotional bravery. Our job onstage is not to feel our feelings but to help the audience feel theirs. The best actors are active in their performance, overcoming and transcending emotional and intellectual obstacles. When an audience watches that action, they relate and they connect deeply to our collective humanity. When we do this through song, the impact is doubled - the lyric gives the actor the roadmap of what to act and the music carries the tone of the world they are living in straight to the soul of the audience.
Believe it or not, doing this well isn't just about being innately brave. There is a technique to truthful acting through song. My students find that when they can integrate these repeatable techniques, they can easily drop into any role or song - whether in an audition, a cabaret show or a full length production - with abandon and with repeatable results.
In my thirty-plus-year career as a professional actor, I learned how to do this largely on the job. The people who taught me how to communicate with passion, compassion, and clarity are the gifted directors I have worked with. Remarkable directors like Michael Ockrent, Jerry Zaks, David Hyde Pierce, David Leveaux, Scott Ellis, Marcia Milgrom Dodge, Tina Landau, Warren Carlyle, Denis Jones and Susan Stroman. I have tried to take the best of these folks with me into a coaching, directing, and teaching environment so that I can assist my students in sharing the best of themselves.
I have served as a guest artist and teacher at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival, Broadway Workshop, Broadway Teaching Group, NYU Steinhardt, NYU Graduate Musical Theater Writing, Wagner College, Oklahoma City University, Temple University and many others. I am a current faculty member at CAP 21 at Molloy College and for Singnasium where I teach an ongoing performance technique class. And I coach privately! Contact me directly for current rates.

Class with Farah has made me a more confident performer and I look forward to every class. It’s a great blend of individualized coaching and group support where we all learn and grow each week. I revamped my audition book with material I love that works for me. One of the best classes for performers to take!

Farah’s class has really helped me understand who I am as a performer more than I ever did before. She has helped me play to my strengths and find great material for my audition book and shows.

Farah has helped me embrace and hone what makes me unique as an actor and singer and then take that right into the audition room. She is incredibly insightful, encouraging and knowledgable, and I’ve taken significant steps forward since I started working with her. I cannot recommend working with her enough, whether to prep for a big audition, try new material or simply grow as a performer.

It’s obvious from the first few moments of her class that Farah brings a love of actors and craft along with her considerable talent into the room. Her unique perspectives from both sides of the “the table” are invaluable - I cannot recommend her more highly!

I was able to get my first offer out of college as a principal actor in a holiday show which was amazing! When working together, Farah had convinced me to keep a specific ballad in my book, one she thought I could get hired with. In my audition, they had asked me to sing a second song and I am very glad I had the song she suggested ready to go! I do not think I would have booked the show if I didn't have that song in my book; and I am very thankful to her for that!

I had the good fortune to work with Farah Alvin on two separate occasions. First, as a student in her Rock Vocal Performance class, and then when she directed my cabaret show here in NYC. Farah brings to the table a ton of great ideas, an unbridled enthusiasm, endless fun and intense focus. She clarifies goals for a show or a song. Her vast experience in performance, theater, and recording provides a professional point of view throughout the entire process. I really love her and look forward to working with her again at anytime in the (hopefully near!) future.
